Phoenix Clog danced out for the first time on Saturday 30th April, at Pilgrim Morris Men’s Summer Pole Celebrations in the centre of Guildford. They met, together with other guest Sides, outside the Star at the bottom of Guildford High Street, then danced in procession up the steep, cobbled street, to Abbot’s Hospital, at the top of the town. The procession was lead by the King and his Summer Court, Jack-in-the-Green, Barker, complete with Fertility Cake and the Summer Pole, borne on the shoulders of Pilgrim Morris. Outside the hospital the Sides danced for an hour, then again processed , via Tunsgate, to Castle Green, for the erection of the Summer Pole, followed by more dancing. Here, the entire Phoenix Side were knighted by the “King” for their commitment & perseverance, in dancing, with clogs, on grass. After an excellent buffet lunch, at St. Joseph’s Church Hall, the Sides gathered at one of the bridges over the river for more display dances, after which the company moved back to Castle Green, to lower the Summer Pole.
